Cinematic History
In 2009, Bradford became the world’s first UNESCO City of Film, a title awarded in recognition of its rich film heritage and ongoing contributions to the industry. It is one of only 26 cities globally to hold this distinction.
The city boasts an array of iconic filming locations, including Little Germany – a favourite for period dramas such as Downton Abbey and Peaky Blinders. Nearby, the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway famously featured in the 1970 adaptation of The Railway Children, along with numerous other productions.
Venues
Bradford is also home to the National Science and Media Museum, which introduced the UK’s first IMAX screen in 1983. In 1993, it added the unique Cinerama screen at Pictureville, making it the only public cinema in the UK capable of screening this rare format. The museum hosts a range of festivals and events year-round, including the much-loved Widescreen Weekend every September – a celebration of large-screen formats and cinema technology from past to future.
