Bradford’s Trapezium Gallery is pleased to present Translating the Body, an exhibition directed by Sue Vickerman. Sue is a poet, writer and literary translator who is also a life-model. This exhibition includes six artists’ representations of her body, by photographic artists Ann Evans, Ashwin Vyas, Michael Kilyon, Lois Brothwell and Phil Moody, and sculptor Judith Glynn.
Pauline Cooke of Trapezium Gallery says “Sue is continuing our tradition of representing older women, by exploring the relationship between the artist and their model, which has been such a contentious issue in art history. By taking control of the medium through which these artists portray her and by directing the exhibition herself, Sue is choosing how she is perceived, which is very empowering.”
The trigger for this exhibition was Sue turning sixty and reflecting on how our bodies’ ageing appearance affects our lives and how we feel about ourselves. Sue purposely selected artists aged over sixty for this exhibition. Besides modelling for the images, these ‘translations’ have been selected, curated and in some cases produced from the original takes by Sue herself.
