This 3 hour workshop is all about the reverse piano hinge technique – a kirigami (cut and fold) approach that requires minimal glue and no stitching. It is a deceptively simple (when you know how!) and exciting bookmaking technique that gets viewers inspecting the engineering. This technique binds signatures together, and allows for experimental book arts techniques for creating interesting covers and paper play.
It is split into approximately half taught time, and half supported independent enquiry: once we have mastered how the technique works, we will investigate alternative creative possibilities for our other books, including peep holes, gate folds and multiple hinges. Depending on your pace, you will take away at least 2 handmade books, but as many variations you can make in the 3 hours!
This workshop is designed for those who have some bookmaking experience, or consider themselves a confident maker (has done other forms of paper or fabric crafts before). It will equip you with skills and knowledge to explore this technique further in your own time, and there will be an opportunity to purchase some of the required bookmaking tools from the Short & Few shop.
Spaces are limited to 5 people per session, and the workshop costs includes hot/cold refreshments. If you have any dietary requirements, please email hello@shortandfew.co.uk. As the workshop is running over lunch, please feel free to bring a sandwich or similar along.
