Tuesday Portrait Group in Keighley

19 Nov 2024

13:30 - 15:30

Keighley Creative

Would you like to try your hand at portrait drawing but have no idea where to start? Are you an established artist who would love to have the opportunity to draw someone’s portrait and meet other fine artists?

The Tuesday Portrait Group in Keighley meets once a month at Keighley Creative on the third Tuesday of the month and may be just what you have been looking for.

Informal tuition and support is available if you need it.

COST
You pay on the day. You can pay as much as you feel you are able depending on your circumstances and we suggest somewhere between £10 (minimum) and £15 per session. You can pay with cash or by card.

TIME
We start drawing at 13:30 and finish at 15:30pm with a short break at about 14:45 for tea and coffee, which is included in the price.

WHAT TO BRING
You will need to bring all your own drawing materials and paper.
Given that this is a public space the ideal materials to bring are: pencils, charcoal, oil pastels, watercolour, acrylic or gouache paints depending on your inclination for the day. Pastels if they create dust and oil paint are not suitable for use.

EASELS
We have recently been given four lovely new easels and eight drawing boards by Bradford Senior Power, The Leap and the Arts Council. Not everyone wants to use one and there are not enough for everyone, so we suggest you bring a sketch book with a solid back just in case, rather than just loose paper.

BOOKING ESSENTIAL
To book a place for this session (there will be a maximum of 10 artists per session) please contact Martin Cosgrove, Fine Artist 07 868 529 434

ACCESS
Please note that the life room in Keighley Creative is up lots of steps and there is no lift so you will need a pair of legs, lungs and a heart that can carry you up the steps. Once we move to the new permanent building there will be full access.

HOW TO FIND US
Keighley Creative is in the old Argos building on Cooke Lane opposite Hays Travel and New Look and is between the Airedale Centre and Farm Foods.

If horses are your thing… this one is for you!

During this relaxed and interesting full day workshop at ‘The Classroom’ on the iconic Main Street in Haworth, I will introduce to you the beautiful medium of pastel. I’ll help with your drawing skills and build confidence with the pencils whilst we tackle a beautiful equine  portrait together.

From Faraday to AI: Integrating science and technology into the study of museum collections, with Professor Carl Heron

16 Oct 2024

18:00 - 19:15

University of Bradford

Date and time: Wednesday 16 October 2024, 18:00 BST to 19:15 BST

Attendance and participation: This is a hybrid event. Participants can choose whether they would like to join the event using the online platform or attend in person.

About the event

Join us for the next Cantor Technology Lecture titled ‘From Faraday to AI: Integrating science and technology into the study of museum collections, with Professor Carl Heron’.

“All arts and sciences have a connection with one another, and discoveries in natural philosophy and other branches of speculative knowledge, for the improvement and advancement of which the said museum or collection was intended, do and may give rise to the most useful experiments and inventions.” British Museum Act (1753)

This talk will explore the past, present and future of science and technology in the study of museum collections.

What is the context of these interventions and what have we learned? How do these applications support the wider purposes of museums, such as enhancing access and promoting understanding? What are the opportunities and challenges?

Professor Carl Heron will select relevant examples drawn from the British Museum collection and widen the discussion to other museums and the essential roles they play.

Biography

Professor Carl Heron is Director of Scientific Research at the British Museum. He was appointed in 2016 after 26 years at the University of Bradford.

Carl graduated in Archaeological Sciences at Bradford in 1984. He completed a PhD at University College, Cardiff and spent two years at the University of Liverpool as a postdoctoral researcher before taking up a lectureship at Bradford. Between September 2023 and June 2024, Carl was acting Deputy Director at the British Museum.

Drawing Classes with Jake Attree

10 - 24 Oct 2024

10:00 - 16:00

Salts Mill

Drawing Classes with Jake Attree start at Salts on Thursday October 10th.

Jake, who trained at the Royal Academy, lives and works in Saltaire. He has work in galleries and collections across the UK and taught throughout his life. To learn more please call 07533110531.
Jake says:

“Commencing on 10th October, I’ll be running a Thursday drawing class on the 2nd Floor of Salts Mill, in the recently extended Espresso Bar area. The class will begin at 10.00 am through to 4.00 pm. You can attend for the whole day or half a day. All levels of drawing ability are welcome. We will be covering a wide range of subject matter: still life, plant drawing, costume life, etc, in a variety of media. It will be intensive and challenging, but only in a good way; the return on being intensively challenged is that it will be deeply rewarding and you will find another dimension of yourself which further engagement with drawing can only enhance and develop.
Please bring nothing smaller than an A4 sketchbook with you, larger if you like; a B or 2B pencil and an eraser for this first session. (If necessary, all these can be purchased on the ground floor of the Mill.) We will have a further conversation about materials during this first session.

The fee will be £20 for the full day, or £10 for the half-day.

I look forward to meeting and welcoming you on the 10th. I will be waiting by the entrance to the Diner on the 2nd floor to direct you to the space we will be using. Please pay with cash for this first session.”
