Policing, Nationalism and Violence: Black Resistance to British Racism

16 Oct 2024

17:00 - 19:00

University of Bradford Union of Students

While 2020 saw the largest anti-racist protests in British history, 2024 has seen fascism attempt to reclaim the streets. For the antiracism of the BLM and Palestine Solidarity demonstrators, racialised people are criminalised as criminals, terrorists or illegals. For the far-right, white people are the victims of a state which is too soft on borders, law and order.

This lecture considers how these two contrasting critiques of racial crisis ended up pointing the finger at each other. Dr. Adam Elliot-Cooper intends on doing this by considering how the liberal centrism of the Labour Party and its supporters have attempted to satisfy the left by adopting terms like institutional racism, while also trying to satisfy the right, by continuing to expand police, prison and border power.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, this balancing act has satisfied neither party, resulting in a surge in both radical anti-racism at the grassroots, and radical nationalism on the streets. The resolution of these tensions won’t just shape the fate of Britain’s racial landscape, but the terrain upon which the future of politics, economics and the environment, is fought.

About Dr. Adam Elliot-Cooper:

Dr. Adam Elliott-Cooper is Lecturer in Social and Public Policy in the School of Politics and International Relations, Queen Mary University of London. His first monograph, Black Resistance to British Policing, was published by Manchester University Press in May 2021. He is also co-author of Empire’s Endgame: Racism and the British State (Pluto Press, 2021).

Agenda

5pm – 5:30pm: Registration and Refreshments

5:30pm – 6:30pm: Lecture by Dr. Adam Elliot-Cooper

6:30pm – 7pm: Q&A

For any questions, please contact info@raceequalitynetwork.org.uk

Come join us for an insightful lecture and discussion on the intersection of policing, nationalism, and violence in the context of black resistance to British racism. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to engage in important conversations and learn more about this important topic. See you there!

Lilies on the Land

14 - 16 Nov 2024

19:30 - 21:45

Studio @ The Bradford Playhouse

Lilies on the Land charts the personal journeys of four women who sign up to join the Women’s Land Army during World War II, determined to work endless backbreaking hours on farms across the country in a bid to do their best for the War Effort.

But how do these women, all hailing from different walks of life, torn from their families and bereft of all basic home comforts, deal with the hardships of farming life and the pressures of war? Maybe work clothes full of mice and toilet rolls falling from the sky are just what it takes for these girls to get through!

Based on one hundred and fifty letters and interviews with original Land Girls, along with songs from the period, Lilies on the Land is a revealing, funny and wonderfully moving portrait of some of Britain’s pluckiest unsung heroes.

The play was devised and first performed by the Lions part.

Endless Spite

7 Dec 2024

15:00 - 23:00

Kirkgate Centre, Shipley

We’re pleased to bring you details on an all-dayer called: Endless Spite. Over 1/2 tickets have sold already so act fast.

Saturday 7th December, at Kirkgate Centre, Shipley.

Welcome to the first ever Endless Spite event in Shipley, Bradford. A collaboration between Endless Hum and the legendary Out of Spite collective; renowned for hosting some of the most iconic and memorable punk / hardcore shows across Leeds and Bradford for over 20 years.

9 bands will be staggered across two rooms in the wonderfully refurbished Kirkgate Centre. We’ll also have live projections, merchandise, craft ale on tap, food vendors, record stalls and more to be announced.

Tickets are once again first come, first served so don’t miss out and grab yours via the link below.

Obey Cobra:

A lot has changed since Obey Cobra tore the roof off our very first Endless Hum gig back in 2022. Cardiff’s best noise export have been rightly picked up by the renowned Rocket Recordings label (home to the likes of Goat, Gnod and Teeth of the Sea) and released their latest LP ‘Mwg Drwg’ earlier this year. Their sound has always been a difficult one to pin down, merging elements of krautrock, psychedelia, shoegaze and electronics together to form a formidable live show only visible through a thick layer of feedback. They’ve always been a highlight for us and finally, they return to Shipley.

https://obeycobra.bandcamp.com/album/mwg-drwg

Cowtown:

As one of the longest running bands to come out of Leeds infamous DIY LS6 area, Cowtown have continued to craft their off-kilter, garage-punk for what must be nearly two decades! With four killer albums under their belts at home on the likes of Gringo Records and Domino Records as well as a plethora of long out of print early releases, Cowtown’s back catalogue is extensive but well crafted. Steadily churning out bangers and never waining in popularity, consistently radiating posi-vibes with nostalgic nods to the likes of Devo, Chinese Stars and Ex Models. Its frankly about time we had them on.

https://cowtown.bandcamp.com/album/fear-of

The Sex Maniacs:

The Sex Maniacs return to play their 2nd gig in roughly 20 years! Featuring members of noteworthy legends of the Leeds punk scene Voorhees, The Horror and Gentlemans Pistols. The Sex Maniacs were mainly active in the early 00’s playing Punk Rock’n’roll influenced by the likes of Black Flag, AC/DC, Stooges, Outcold and Turbonegro.

Having only ever released one album on Eccentric Man Records back in 2003 titled ‘Mean as hell’ and toured it with the likes of Scissorfight and Dukes of Nothing. What a time to be alive.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E2dM2lo4rhU

Weekend Faithful:

From Newcastle and playing their first ever gig in Yorkshire, Weekend Faithful offer a little respite playing wonderfully anthem-filled, function room rock that your dad would probably love and in the vein of The Hold Steady, The Pixies and Bruce Springsteen, featuring members of Irked, Drifts, Night flowers and Fast Blood.

https://weekendfaithful.bandcamp.com/track/you-hardly-even-touched-your-drink

Machiavellian Art:

A maximalist blowout of sax-honking noise rock, doom metal, hardcore punk, and shoegaze, with industrial noise, howling vocals, paranoid rambles, and pure disdain for oneself and the rest of you layered on top. ‘Indoctrination Sounds’ was released last year through Riot Season Records (home to Shit & Shine, Gnod and Acid Mothers Temple).

https://machiavellianart.bandcamp.com/…/population-control

Ox Scapula:

Formed in 2006 OS were once regulars in the Leeds DIY scene but haven’t played these parts in years! Previous releases were through the well respected Gringo Records, Audacious Art Experiment and Sea Owl. Expect nothing less than frantic stroppy guitars, heavy grooving bass, twisted grooves and ambient droning.

https://oxscapula.bandcamp.com/album/hands-out-2

Tiger Island:

Tiger Island have been peddling their power-pop loving garage punk rock around venues of West Yorkshire since 2022. Fuelled by massive riffs, pounding drums and tunes you can actually dance to, often compared to the likes of Sleater-Kinny, Hot Snakes and the Murder City Devils.

https://tigerisland.bandcamp.com/album/looka-looka-looka-ep

Cellar Messiah:

Bradford/Leeds based newcomer’s featuring ex-members of Rent Boys and Jon Jones & The Beatniks Movement. CM blend elements of psych, shoegaze and krautrock to throb the soul. For fans of Gnod, Obey Cobra and Thee Oh Sees.
https://cellarmessiah.bandcamp.com/track/precipissed-2

The Breedling:

The brain child of Chris Spalton; The Breedling takes an inquisitive, DIY approach and attitude to the way sounds are manipulated. His latest album on Wrong Speed Records takes primal noise music and mixes it with qualities of doom, drone and electronica.

https://thebreedling.bandcamp.com/album/irukandji?from=embed

Tickets on sale now:

Tickets are available via the link below and are sent via email upon purchase. All names will be checked on the door, the night of the event. Please bring proof of purchase (mobile accepted). Tickets are non-refundable unless the event is cancelled. NOTAFLOF.

Timings will be announced closer to the date of the event. The event will start from 3pm and end around 11pm in time for those reliant on public transport.

Shipley train station is located only 5 minutes walk away and the last train leaves for Leeds at 11:15pm. There’s also a taxi rank just around the corner on Kirkgate Road.

After Miss Julie

9 - 12 Oct 2024

19:30 - 21:00

Studio @ The Bradford Playhouse

Written in 1995, Patrick Marber transposes August Strindberg’s 1888 play Miss Julie to the balmy summer evening of 7 July 1945. A large country house in Yorkshire. Whilst the inhabitants and staff celebrate the post-war landslide General Election victory of Clement Attlee’s Labour over Churchill’s Conservative Party, three people below stairs conduct their own power struggle of class and sexual politics, fuelled – but simultaneously restricted – by their own desire, status and the shifting sands of the wider socio-political landscape.

Artist talk: Daniel Meadows

12 Oct 2024

13:00 - 13:45

Impressions Gallery

One not to miss! Fifty years ago, pioneering documentary photographer Daniel Meadows set off from Impressions Gallery former home in York on his 14 month journey touring throughout the UK on his Free Photographic Omnibus.

Daniel Meadows is one of the UK’s leading documentary photographers. His work, as well as his association with Impressions Gallery, stretches back for more than half a century; for, in November 1972, the joint exhibition with Martin Parr, ‘Butlin’s by the Sea’, was the show which launched Impressions when it opened its doors in the Shambles, York, as the country’s first photography gallery outside of London.

Among the many books Daniel has produced over his career, are the 20 zines which he has made with Café Royal Books, including a colour edition, ‘Butlin’s Filey 1972‘.

Daniel will focus specifically on the work he did in the mid-seventies as photographer-in-residence to the Borough of Pendle, documenting the last days of a steam powered cotton mill, a series which in 1978 became the heart of his Camerawork touring show ‘Shuttles, Steam and Soot’.  This is a project he will revisit and celebrate next spring when a revised edition of that exhibition will open at Four Corners in London.

During our Photobook Fair, many of Daniel’s Café Royal Books zines will be on sale, including fresh printings of the three editions published to celebrate the 50th anniversary of his ground-breaking journey around England in the Free Photographic Omnibus 1973-74.  Also on sale will be his recent title from Bluecoat, ‘Daniel Meadows, Book of the Road’.

This talk is a very special opportunity to hear Daniel talk about his lifetime’s work recording British society.

Free, booking recommended and donations welcome via Art Tickets, or call the gallery on 01274 737843.
