The Live Room presents Showman & Coole

24 Jan 2025

20:00 - 22:30

Caroline Street Social Club

Through twenty years and a couple of thousand shows together in bands such as The Foggy Hogtown Boys and The Lonesome Ace Stringband, John Showman and Chris Coole have developed a deep and instinctual musical bond. Their music lurks in a truly unique space that is somewhere on the outskirts of old-time, bluegrass, and folk. The songs of John Hartford, Hank Williams, Dock Boggs, and The Band share space with the fiddle tunes of Eck Robertson and Ed Haley. The duo’s original songs and tunes take in all these vistas and paint something both personal and timely.

They have performed across North America and Europe at festivals such as Merlefest, Rockygrass, Winnipeg Folk Festival, Mariposa, Wintergrass, Gooikroots, and The John Hartford Memorial Festival. In 2022, the duo released two albums, Afield, a collection of old-time fiddle tunes, and Much Further Out than Inevitable – A Tribute to Some Music of John Hartford.

‘John Showman has made his mark as “one of the very best and most influential fiddle players in Canada’ – Steve Pritchard, CIUT 89.5 FM

‘Renowned for his clawhammer banjo picking, Coole now establishes himself as a gripping songwriter.’ – Roddy Campbell, Penguin Eggs Magazine

The Live Room presents Carter Sampson (USA)

2 Mar 2025

19:00 - 21:30

Caroline Street Social Club

Oklahoma is a hotbed of good music and no-one knows that better than the self-crowned ‘Queen of Oklahoma’ Carter Sampson, who will be touring the UK with her full band from 28 Feb to 16 March 2025.

Born and raised in the central state, Sampson writes relatable and honest songs about family, love, life and historical characters. She’s released six albums with her two latest records being released on the influential Horton record label. Her last album, Gold, spent many months on the Americana Music Charts.

She tours internationally, and has had much success playing regularly in Europe and the UK: ‘I really love playing in the UK. I joke about it a lot but American audiences are generally loud and don’t listen very well – English audiences are so quiet and kind.’

Carter won first place in the Chris Austin Songwriting contest at Merlefest, NC, and has performed at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, Rocky Mountain Folks Fest and the Lincoln Center in NYC as a top finalist in their respective songwriting contests.

Carter is also the founder and director of The Rock and Roll Camp for Girls OKC, a non-profit organisation set up in Oklahoma that empowers girls, women and non-binary folks through music education.

‘Add her high-quality song writing and gorgeous vocals and she is no longer a promising country singer songwriter but one who can now be talked about as being one of the very best around. If ‘Wilder side’ sowed the seeds this tremendous album brings that talent into full bloom.’ -americanrootsuk.com

Bradford International Film Festival Launch Screening: An American Werewolf in London

22 Oct 2024

19:00

Pictureville Cinema

Join us to celebrate spooky season and the launch of Bradford International Film Festival 2024 with John Landis’ cult classic film, An American Werewolf in London.

An American Werewolf in London is a strikingly original take on the classic werewolf myth, combining horror and comedy with a distinctly modern edge. Directed by John Landis, the film subverts the traditional monster movie by infusing its gruesome subject matter with moments of humor and surrealism. Its mix of body horror and dark comedy allows the film to stand out among its contemporaries, maintaining tension while injecting levity.

Shot on location in both the eerie moors of Wales and the bustling streets of London, the film skillfully juxtaposes the isolation of rural landscapes with the energy of urban life. Its practical effects, especially the groundbreaking transformation scenes, were pioneering at the time, using detailed prosthetics and animatronics to horrifyingly realistic effect. The special effects work of Rick Baker earned the film an Academy Award for Best Makeup, cementing its legacy as a landmark in visual effects history.

This screening will be preceded by a short introduction to the film festival from it’s directors Jan Ruppe & Louisa Rose Mackleston.
