Cynthia, a Yorkshire factory worker and wannabe fashion designer, is desperate to be a part of the changes happening in swinging London. Wide eyed and innocent, Cynthia soon finds herself under the wing of the intriguing and glamourous Jayne and her family of collected outcasts.

Using 1960’s inspired music, and set around the events of the Grosvenor Square riots, 68 tackles the clash of cultures taking place in late 1960’s Britain from the changing attitudes towards gay rights, and the Vietnam war, to police brutality and the lasting effects of sexual abuse.

The True Story of Maria Marten and the Murder in the Red Barn

16 - 19 Oct 2024

19:30 - 21:30

Studio @ The Bradford Playhouse

The True Story of Maria Marten and the Murder in the Red Barn, written by Audrey Coldron, follows the desperate fate of Maria Marten, the victim of one of Victorian Britain’s most infamous crimes.

The tale of Maria Marten and the people involved with her at the time of her death became an exaggerated and partially fabricated Victorian melodrama. Audrey Coldron’s play uses thorough research of contemporary documents and eyewitness accounts to produce an authentic dramatisation of a young woman’s life and demise.

Fans of true crime will love this!

Responses to Art: DRAW

7 Nov 2024

10:00 - 13:00

Cartwright Hall Art Gallery

This group meets on the first Thursday of the month as a rule. If you enjoy exploring exhibitions and museum collections as well as creating art – this could be for you. The sessions feature an introductory talk about an exhibition or item from Bradford’s collections, followed by discussion and a practical session which may or may not be tutored.

Looking towards Bradford 2025, ‘DRAW’ is inspired by David Hockney’s daily practice of depicting the world around him through drawing. This will be our theme for 2024 – 2025

10 – 1pm Thursday 7th November 2024   at Cartwright Hall Art Gallery

Curator of the exhibition ‘Calm’, Jill Iredale will talk about this project led by a group of young people who have brought works from the stores to create a space in which people could ‘come and relax in a calming environment’. The ‘Healthy Minds Apprentices’, worked with museum staff, poets and illustrators to achieve a very different setting to the other galleries, with comfy seating and exhibits to touch and feel.

We shall use this display as a starting point for a relaxed drawing session, drawing boards are supplied and basic drawing materials but do feel free to bring sketch books and dry drawing materials as well.

Meet in the café from 10am for a cup of coffee before we meet Jill upstairs in the gallery at 11am.

Cost: £10.00 …(pay on the day)… Book by phone: 01274 431212

Supported by the Friends of Bradford Art Galleries and Museums

Refashioned Threads

30 Nov 2024

19:30 - 23:30

The Hive Community Centre

Join us for our next Saturday Social – Refashioned Threads

Refashioned Threads is our interpretation of swapping Pre-loved clothing to cut down on items going to landfill and for others to enjoy and for you to enjoy a new to you item or two (or more!). For this event we have chosen the theme of ‘Christmas Glitz & Glam’ as the Christmas ‘do’ and celebrations in December where a ‘new’ dress or outfit is desired, but not always within our budget.

So bring your pre-loved party dresses, outfits, accessories, bags and shoes and we will give you a voucher equivalent to the number of items you bring along. You can then come along to our informal evening, socialise, have a drink from the bar and go ‘shopping’ with your voucher. You may even get carried away and want more items than your voucher is worth or perhaps you don’t have any items to bring along to swap, don’t worry all we ask is just £1 per item (bargain!)
