Jim Causley – A Causley Christmas

12 Dec 2024

19:00

The Hullabaloo Shipley

Join Jim in celebrating the Christmas season as he entertains you with lesser known West Country carols, medieval and secular carols from around the British Isles, his own settings of moving Christmas poems by his relative, the late Cornish poet Charles Causley as well a gurt dollop of festive fun with songs of over-indulgence and even a spot of panto too! If you are feeling a little dismayed with the over-commercialisation of “Christmas present” then join Jim for a journey through Christmas past that will be guaranteed to get you in the festive spirit!

Since the release of his debut album in 2005, Causley’s unique voice and persona have helped him become one of the most well-loved and respected figures of today’s contemporary roots and folk scene. A prolific collaborator, Causley is hugely admired for his work with iconic groups The Devil’s Interval and Mawkin:Causley as well as playing, touring and recording alongside Waterson:Carthy, John McCusker, Eddie Reader, Graham Coxon, Shirley Collins, Michael Morpurgo, Show of Hands, Kate Rusby, David Rotheray of Beautiful South fame and many more. He was described by Mojo Magazine as “the finest singer of his generation” and they put Forgotten Kingdom in their Top Ten Folk Albums of 2016 list. Westcountry father of folk Geoff Lakeman described Causley as possessing “A voice in a million” in a recent interview in the Western Morning News, some accolade indeed!

More than simply a folk-singer, multi award winning singer-songwriter, musician and proud Devonian Jim Causley is an all-round entertainer and during the past decade Causley has been nominated no less than six times for a BBC Radio 2 Folk Award, last year he was nominated as “Singer of the Year” at the 2017 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, he won the Spiral Earth Singer of the Year award in 2014, presented his own folk music show on BBC Radio Devon and in 2015 he worked with BBC TV historian Dr Sam Willis to create the music for his show ‘Highwaymen, Outlaws and Villains’ and was asked to perform his song about Dartmoor tin mining ‘Pride of the Moor’ on BBC TV’s Countryfile – Dartmoor Special.

Syteria // Hot Rockets and More

21 Dec 2024

19:30 - 23:00

The Underground

Pure Power Darkside Management & The Underground, Bradford
Presents
THE SYTERIA CHRISTMAS PARTY

Featuring
SYTERIA plus special guests HOT ROCKETS, THE RED BASTARDS & THE MISPELT

SYTERIA
Welcome to SYTERIA WORLD. A realm of colourful, pounding and punked-melodic rock that is occupied by Yorkshire -bred band Syteria, who return this coming August 11 with their third album SYTERIA WORLD via Cargo.
Formed by Jackie ‘Jax’ Chambers, of the legendary UK rockers Girlschool, alongside Argentine siblings Julia and Pablo Calvo, and Steph Dawson, with previous albums Rant-O-Bot and Reflection, and a host of tours and festival appearances, Syteria have established themselves as a force to be reckoned with.

The Syteria sound mixes elements of modern pop/punk energies with more contemporary rock anthemic choruses, incorporating four-part harmonies and using the ancient Solfeggio scale of recording in 432hz, instead of the standard 440hz, to leave you feeling in tune with the universe.

The debut album, Rant-O-Bot received an award nomination and was shortlisted to the final five at the ‘Independent Music Awards’, as well as ranking highly in many online voting polls for best band in various categories. The follow up album, Reflection, was released in 2020, just before the pandemic, supported by countless of stunning reviews.
Back now with Syteria World, the band have crafted an introspective album that explores the ups and downs of life through twelve tracks of powerful guitar riffs, pounding beats, and catchy choruses. The songs touch on a range of themes, from chasing dreams and overcoming fears to dealing with breakups and social media monsters. There’s a sense of maturity and wisdom in the lyrics and music that marks a significant step forward for the band.

One of the most striking features of Syteria World is the honesty and vulnerability in the lyrics. Tracks like ‘Chasing Dreams’and ‘Breaking Through’ explore personal struggles and the journey towards self-discovery. Similarly, ‘It’s a Mess’ confronts the chaos of the world head-on, while ‘Debt Generation’ takes a critical look at consumerism and societal pressures.

The album showcases the band’s versatility and range, with each track offering a unique take on the challenges and joys of life. From the bitter frustration of ‘E.M.P.T.Y.’ to the celebratory spirit of ‘Raise Your Glass,’ this is an album that will have you singing along and nodding in agreement.

HOT ROCKETS
Hot Rockets Are a three piece rock band from North Yorkshire. Playing all original riff and roll.

THE RED BASTARDS
Full throttle release balancing anger & political commentary with having a good old time! Punktuation.

THE MISPELT
The Mispelt have taken their blistering live performance around the length and breadth of the UK with outings to Europe and the USA.

The band have played legendary venues such as 100 club, CBGBs and Scum and with equally legendary bands such as UK Subs, Stiff Little Fingers, The Damned and Subhumans

Writers Round – Emilia Quinn // Savannah Gardner // Brook Law // Chris Dover

19 Dec 2024

The Underground

Join a soul-stirring night of live music as talented singer-songwriters Brooke Law, Emilia Quinn, and Savannah Gardner bring their unique blend of Alt-Country, Americana, and Southern Rock to the stage in an intimate, stripped-down setting. Known for their captivating lyrics, raw performances, and genre-bending sound, these artists promise a night that’s equal parts grit, grace, and groove. Special guest Chris Dover will be adding his own brand of Outlaw country and heartfelt storytelling to the round.

Come for the music, stay for the stories, and let these rising stars take you on a journey of sound and emotion. About the Artists:

Brooke Law – Brooke has enjoyed a successful 2024. She has performed at various festivals with her band. These include C2C Festival at the o2 as well as The Long Road, Black Deer and Live Stock festivals. She also gigs regularly on the London circuit (Omeara, Brixton Blues Kitchen, Slaughtered Lamb etc). She gets regular radio coverage via e.g. BBC, Absolute Radio, Country Line Radio & TV, London Live TV and others as well as regular mentions in the music press.

Her releases are attracting new followers at each turn and her writing and performances came to the attention of the Texas based Buddy Holly Songwriters Retreat to which she was invited in September. The retreat is a gathering of songwriters brought together to jointly create new songs and to share each others’ thoughts on their profession. The event is curated by two time Grammy Award winning and ACM nominee Beth Nielsen Chapman. Brooke also performed at Bush Hall presented by AEG for a songwriters circle in October.

Emilia Quinn – Emilia Quinn is a dynamic UK-based musician and singer-songwriter known for her raw, soulful voice and genre-blending sound that fuses Americana, Country, and Rock influences. With a background in classical training and a passion for storytelling, Emilia creates emotionally charged music that resonates deeply with her listeners. Her powerful vocals and honest lyricism explore themes of love, resilience, and self-discovery, earning her recognition in both the British and international music scenes.

Emilia’s career began in grassroots venues, but her unique blend of styles quickly caught attention, leading her to perform at major festivals like Country2Country, The Long Road, Black Deer and share the stage with prominent artists. Her British CMA Award nominated debut album ‘Wanderlust & Breaking Rules” (2023), showcases her versatile talent, combining heartfelt ballads with upbeat, fiery tracks. Known for her captivating live performances, Emilia’s on-stage energy and authenticity have solidified her reputation as a rising star in the indie Country and Americana scene.

Savannah Gardner – An old soul with an exciting new sound, Savannah Gardner is rewriting the outlaw country genre. Her freewheeling, sometimes gritty, sometimes hauntingly beautiful songs speak to a new generation determined to stand up and be their authentic selves. Since arriving in London from her native California, Savannah has championed the growth of women in Country & Americana music, leading the charge with her own brand of kick ass Americana and promoting monthly Ladies Nights featuring some of the scene’s most outstanding female talent.

She has co-written songs with Sharon Vaughn (Reba McEntire, Willie Nelson, Kenny Rogers, Jimmy Buffet) and Martin Sutton (LeAnn Rimes, Celine Dion, Backstreet Boys) and her new and debut album, Recovering Good Girl, is produced by Dale Davis, the legendary former bass player and musical director for Amy Winehouse.

The Shires – The Two Of Us Tour

23 May 2025

19:30

King’s Hall and Winter Gardens

The UK’s biggest country music export The Shires have announced an intimate acoustic tour for 2025.

The Shires achievements speak for themselves: three consecutive UK Top 3 albums, four #1 UK Country albums, 100 million+ streams, two Gold-certified records, and countless sold-out headline shows, including filling the prestigious Royal Albert Hall.

The Shires first broke through in 2014 with their single ‘Nashville Grey Skies’, a playful song about Britain needing its own country scene. And that’s something which they helped happen, starting with their 2015 debut Brave, which became the first ever Top 10 album by a UK country music artist. That success continued with a succession of hit albums: 2016’s My Universe, 2018’s Accidentally On Purpose, 2020’s Good Years and 2022’s 10 Year Plan.

Their authenticity saw them embraced by the Nashville scene immediately, leading to two CMA Awards, touring highlights including C2C Festival and shows as guests to Carrie Underwood, Little Big Town, The Corrs and more.

Join Hayley as she navigates middle age – and as everyone agrees, the middle of anything is always the most delicious part (excluding donuts, avocados or plane seats) – the joys of remaining (mostly) happily unmarried and the truly horrific journey of later-in-life contraception. Milton Jones – HA!MILTON

23 Jun 2025

19:30

King’s Hall and Winter Gardens

This is not a musical. Milton Jones is tone deaf and has no sense of rhythm, but at least he doesn’t make a song and dance about it.

He has more important things to discuss. Like giraffes…and there’s a bit about tomatoes.

You might know him from Mock the WeekLive at the Apollo or Radio 4. Or that time he stood for the Scottish National Party, fought a hard campaign, but in the end had to respect the wishes of the people of Cardiff.

A whole new show of daftness. You know it makes sense.

Plumhall (Michelle Plum and Nick B Hall) are an acclaimed UK songwriting duo known for their captivating vocal harmonies and exquisite acoustic guitar playing. Their original songs have earned them widespread acclaim.

Their first two albums, Thundercloud and The Ghost of Noise, received significant recognition, including a “Hidden Gem” recommendation from The Guardian/Observer. From the alt-country feel of the debut to the more experimental sound of the follow-up, Plumhall have shown their ability to blend strong songwriting with diverse musical influences. Their much-anticipated third album, One Star Awake, was released in June 2024 to critical acclaim and is available on all major platforms, as well as in CD format at their live shows.

2024 was a remarkable year for the pair. They completed a successful 30-date tour as special guests of Fairport Convention on their Winter Tour, with Fairport joining Plumhall on stage each night to perform “One Star Awake,” the title track of Plumhall’s latest album, which also features Fairport’s Ric Sanders. Winter Wilson

12 Apr 2025

19:30 - 22:00

Black Dyke Mills Heritage Venue

We are delighted to welcome back the stunning harmonies of Winter Wilson to the mill.

When Mike Harding dubbed Winter Wilson as one of the hardest working duos on the circuit, he’d clearly done his homework. In 2019 aside from touring around the UK, Winter Wilson performed in Australia, Spain, Belgium and Canada. They also released Live & Unconventional, the long-awaited live album, recorded on tour and at Cropredy Festival with folk rock icons Fairport Convention.

It is in live performance where these two really excel. Now in their 9th year as full-time musicians, Kip Winter and Dave Wilson bring a sense of intimacy to every venue, blending superb, often hard-hitting original songs, stunning harmonies and musicianship with sometimes hilarious humour and tales of life on the road. Kip (vocals, accordion, guitar, flute) “simply has a voice to die for” (John Roffey, Maverick Magazine), whilst Dave (vocals, guitar and banjo) is now rightly recognized as being amongst the top tier of British songwriters, with his songs sung in folk clubs across the UK and beyond. Together, their voices are sublime.

Their music has been featured on Alan Raww’s BBC Introducing Radio Show and played on regular rotation, and the band has also performed exclusive live sessions.
