WORKSHOPS: Bringing in the Green – Introduction to Needlepoint

6 Dec 2024

10:30 - 13:30

Ilkley Manor House

Celebrate the festive season by creating your own needlepoint design based on your favourite evergreen foliage or winter plant. Join tutor Shaun Richardson at Ilkley Manor House on Friday, 6 December.

At what can sometimes be a stressful time of the year, be immersed in the creative practice of needlepoint and be reminded that even in winter, the natural world provides much to celebrate. You can bring along a photograph, magazine, book, or other image to help you, or you can work entirely from your imagination. Your inspiration could be an evergreen such as holly, ivy or an old pine tree, plants varying from mistletoe to poinsettias, the bark of a birch tree or a dogwood, or even a Green Man!

You will learn three simple beginner stitches and be shown how to use them creatively, together with demonstrations of how to combine different colours for various effects. You will be provided with all the materials (canvas, needles and yarn) needed to continue and complete your design at home.

The workshop will run for three hours from 10:30am to 1:30pm. Tickets are £24 each, and hot drinks and biscuits will be available. Book your space now by clicking this link.

More information:
Shaun has a longstanding interest in needlepoint/canvaswork (often also referred to as tapestry) stretching back over 30 years, as well as embroidery, hand-dyeing and other textile work. After initially working on commercial kits, he was inspired to make up his own designs, varying from small pieces to large wall hangings over 1m square. He takes inspiration from a long career in archaeology, the natural world, everyday life, found objects and his current job in a supermarket. Examples of Shaun’s work can be found on Twitter at @Sitehutseamstr1 or on Instagram at sitehutseamstress.

The Live Room presents Tim O’Brien & Friends

17 Jan 2025

20:00 - 22:30

Caroline Street Social Club

Multi Grammy winner Tim O’Brien has traveled the world for the past 50 years with his own mix of American folk, bluegrass, blues, and Celtic sounds. Now Tim and his wife, mandolinist and singer Jan Fabricius team up with iconic traditional players Seamie O’Dowd and Dermot Byrne for UK dates early in 2025.

Tim O’Brien is a preferred sideman for people like Mark Knopfler and Steve Earl, and his original songs have been covered by Garth Brooks and the Dixie Chicks. Notable recordings include the Dylan covers of ‘Red on Blonde’, the Grammy winning folk of ‘Fiddler’s Green’, and the Appalachian / Irish collaboration ‘The Crossing’. In recent years his main performing and songwriting partner is his wife Jan Fabricius who adds her vocals and mandolin to O’Brien’s guitar, fiddle, and vocal. Their sweet vocal blend and co-written songs feature prominently on the recent O’Brien releases ‘He Walked On’ and ‘Cup of Sugar’. A new recording of songs co-written with veteran songsmith Tom Paxton is currently in production.

Joining the Nashville duo are renowned Irish musicians Dermot Byrne on accordion and Seamie O’Dowd on guitar, fiddle, bouzouki and vocals. O’Dowd, from Sligo, and Byrne, from Donegal, grew up in musical families and went on to renown in the trad world in their collaborations with Dervish (O’Dowd), Altan (Byrne), and a veritable who’s who of the genre. In concert, the quartet features selections from O’Brien’s extensive repertoire of traditional and original music, with regular steps into the spotlight by Byrne, Fabricius and O’Dowd.

Musical Youth

8 Feb 2025

20:00 - 22:00

Silsden Town Hall

“This Generation Rules the Nation”. The year was 1982 and with these triumphant words, five school kids from Birmingham named Dennis, Michael, Kelvin, Patrick and Junior launched themselves on an unsuspecting public and into pop and reggae history as ‘Pass the Dutchie’ surged to number 1 in the UK within two weeks of release and went on to sell over 5 million copies around the world.

For the next three years, the hits kept on coming as the boys brought reggae out of the ghettos and into pop mainstream with singles like ‘The Youth of Today’, ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’, ‘Heartbreaker’, ‘007’, ‘Tell Me Why’, and ‘Sixteen’ as well as two albums The Youth of Today and Different Style.

They toured throughout the world, exchanging numbers with Michael Jackson, and Motown legend Stevie Wonder wrote a song especially for them, Irene Carra (Flashdance) and Jody Wotley (Shalamar) both sang on Sixteen, whilst also duetting with Latoya Jackson. The band went on to record ‘Unconditional Love’, with disco diva Donna Summer and headlined at the world-famous Montreaux Jazz Festival and Reggae Sunsplash.

Indeed, Musical Youth became the symbol of achievement, hope and pride for many other youths of all ages, creeds, nationalities and colour around the world as their combined talent and hard work reaped its reward and won them respect, culminating in being nominated for a Grammy award as best newcomers in 1984.
