An evening with Kate Fox – On Sycamore Gap (Poetry)

20 Nov 2024

19:00 - 20:15

Wave of Nostalgia, Haworth

A celebration of the tree we lost and those to come From poet Kate Fox comes a book for everyone who knew the famous silhouette of the tree that stood at Sycamore Gap. For those who took shelter, saw its branches against the sky or heard the leaves dance; for all the picnics next to it and the proposals under it. For anyone who feels the strength of silent roots and the quiet promise of the turning year.

For any of us who measure time in rings and wait for green leaves to grow again. For everyone who felt a loss when the gap was just a gap once more, these are words that grew in the space, the hope that shoots like seedlings. Grown against the wide sky of Northumbria, at a place of borders where ancient history meets our modern lives, the tree that stood for so long still has much to say.

This is a book of growth, loss and renewal, a song from soil to soul, about how we all live where the earth meets the sky.

Kate will read from her book, answer questions and sign copies.

The event is at 7PM on 20th November at Wave of Nostalgia, 74 Main Street Haworth BD22 8DP or on Zoom

Tickets are £5 and include 10% off all books in the shop at the event.

Ukulele Orchestra Of Great Britain

30 Jan 2025

19:30

St George’s Hall

Formed in 1985 as the antidote to mindless pop, egocentric rock, and the indulgent, bluster of the music business, The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain donned black tuxedos, and began giving ‘concerts’ in tiny rooms above old pubs.

Four decades (and 400,000,000 plucks) later they’re still thrilling audiences with their off-beat humour and four-stringed virtuosity from Tasmania to the Arctic Circle, Windsor Castle to Carnegie Hall.

There are no drums, pianos, backing tracks, guitars, or banjos, no pitch shifters or electronic trickery – just an astonishing revelation of the rich palette of orchestration afforded by ukuleles and a menagerie of voices in a collision of post-punk performance and old classics.

Come and celebrate the 40th anniversary of this much-loved institution, on a white-knuckle shopping-trolley dash through every kind of musical genre. From ABBA to ZZ Top, Tchaikovsky to Nirvana, Bluegrass to Broadway, all played on the ‘bonsai guitar”.

Eun-Me Ahn Company – Dragons

21 - 22 Mar 2025

19:30

The Alhambra Theatre

Dragons by celebrated South Korean choreographer Eun-Me Ahn is a joyful riot of dance, music and non-stop movement that brings together modern and traditional dance styles from across Asia.

Whilst dragons are feared in the West, in Asia, they represent lightness, joy and optimism.

Eun-Me Ahn’s kaleidoscopic production introduces five young guest performers from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, Indonesia and Taiwan. All born in the year 2000, they appear as holograms, sharing their hopes and fresh perspectives on how past and future can coexist. They interact on the stage with Eun-Me-Ahn and her company of seven South Korean performers with vivid and colourful projections bringing forests and clouded skies to life, powered by an evocative soundtrack seamlessly blending contemporary pop with a traditional score.

Eun-Me Ahn is one of the most important artists in South Korea. Her dance company has performed at 11 major international festivals, including the 2002 FIFA world cup in South Korea. Dragons sees her connecting with Asia’s next generation of talent.

A dazzling example of how talent, technology and not a little craziness can be meshed together into the thrilling whole” Broadway World
