Did you know that on the canal banks of Apperley Bridge you will find an original, 200 year old blacksmith’s forge?
Take this chance to step back in time and observe a traditional craftsman at work as we open our forge to the public.
Nestled next to Dobson Staircase Locks on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal, the forge forms part of the larger, Grade II Listed canal workshop.
The forge is complete with fireplace, bellows, chimney and is surrounded by original canal paraphernalia.
David, our blacksmith, will be offering practical demonstrations in the traditional craft of blacksmithing for visitors to observe and will be happy to answer your questions about his techniques in this wonderful heritage skill.
Prepare to be mesmerized! You might even get to admire a narrowboat or 2 ascending the locks as you watch!
Getting here:
At the swing bridge that crosses the Leeds & Liverpool Canal on Apperley Road, turn up the towpath and the forge is located 200m further on, opposite Dobson Locks and next to Canal & River Trust’s Workshop and offices (what three words: ///tigers.casino.resist).
Parking:
Limited parking is available on site. It would be preferable if visitors arriving by car could park on Apperley Road and then access the site via the towpath on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal.
