July’s topic:
THE QUEST FOR PERSONALISED MEDICINE IN PSYCHOSIS AND SCHIZOPHRENIA

Speaker:
DR SAM MCLEAN

One in four people will experience a mental health condition during their lifetime, and medicines are commonly prescribed to treat people. However, prescribing of psychotropic medicines is largely led by a trial-and-error approach, and one of the major issues is that people don’t like taking these medicines, despite this being an important factor for improving patient outcomes.

This talk will explore how our genetic variability can influence our response to medication, and how genetic testing could help to tailor prescribing of medications.

Dr Samantha McLean is an Associate Professor in Pharmacology in the School of Pharmacy and Medical Sciences at University of Bradford where she is also Deputy Director of Research at Health, Society, People and Place in the Faculty of Life Sciences and a Research Fellow at Wolfson Centre for Applied Health Research. She completed her BSc in Pharmacology at University of Leeds and PhD in Psychopharmacology at University of Bradford, and then began delivering research projects collaborating with major pharmaceutical stakeholders focusing on research and development of antipsychotic and cognitive-enhancing drugs.

Externally she is an Associate Editor for the Journal of Neuroscience Research, an external examiner at Kings College London for the MSc Neuroscience programme and a member of the Pharmacy and Pharmacogenomics Working Group for the Genomic Medicine Service Alliance. She is also a Trustee and Board member of the Cellar Trust, a UK-registered mental health charity supporting people’s mental health across the Bradford district, Craven and surrounding areas.
