Join us to celebrate spooky season and the launch of Bradford International Film Festival 2024 with John Landis' cult classic film, An American Werewolf in London.
An American Werewolf in London is a strikingly original take on the classic werewolf myth, combining horror and comedy with a distinctly modern edge. Directed by John Landis, the film subverts the traditional monster movie by infusing its gruesome subject matter with moments of humor and surrealism. Its mix of body horror and dark comedy allows the film to stand out among its contemporaries, maintaining tension while injecting levity.
Shot on location in both the eerie moors of Wales and the bustling streets of London, the film skillfully juxtaposes the isolation of rural landscapes with the energy of urban life. Its practical effects, especially the groundbreaking transformation scenes, were pioneering at the time, using detailed prosthetics and animatronics to horrifyingly realistic effect. The special effects work of Rick Baker earned the film an Academy Award for Best Makeup, cementing its legacy as a landmark in visual effects history.
This screening will be preceded by a short introduction to the film festival from it’s directors Jan Ruppe & Louisa Rose Mackleston.
