Lift the Ban Campaign Launch – Bradford

24 Jul 2025

10:00 - 13:00

Grange Interlink

In collaboration with Bradford City of Sanctuary, Refugee Action, Bevan House, Asylum Matters, British Red Cross and Beacon, we are launching the Lift the Ban Bradford Campaign Launch!

📅Thursday 24th July

🕖10am to 1pm

📍Grange Interlink, Summerville Road, BD7 1PX.

About Lift the Ban Campaign:

In the UK, people seeking refugee status are banned from working while they wait months, and often years, for a decision on their asylum claim. It is important that those people who have risked everything to find safety should have the best chance of rebuilding their lives and becoming part of the community. This means giving people seeking asylum the right to work so that they can use their skills and live in dignity. The Lift the Ban coalition is working to change this!

You will have the fantastic opportunity to:

Hear from sanctuary seekers about their stories, skills and dreams
Learn how this law impacts Bradford's community and economy
Learn about ways to show your support and join the campaign
It is time to stand in solidarity with refugees and asylum seekers and organise against the hostile environment!

For any questions and queries, contact fatima@raceequalitynetwork.org.uk

The Bingley Gallery Summer Exhibition 2025

3 Jul - 7 Sep 2025

10:00 - 17:00

The Bingley Gallery

The Bingley Gallery’s annual Summer Exhibition aims to test the public’s appetite for artists who have not showed there before, alongside new work from returning and permanent artists. That means the walls of the exhibition area are pretty well packed with considerable variety of genres, styles and media. As always, the gallery maintains its commitment to promoting local artists.

It is always interesting to learn from the artists the inspiration behind their artworks. For Matthew Duckett, his landscapes can result from local views or even movies (many of the titles are quotes from ‘Ice Cold in Alex’). Ian Tothill’s mixed media /collages result from chance finds or encounters. One, ‘Tumbling Hills’ derived from a chance encounter with an oud playing Car Wash Owner, met whilst the artist was searching for a rare, above ground glimpse of Bradford Beck. Richard Smiths works relate to historic weaving in our region. Some of these are the original artwork, often annotated. Others include the point papers used as an intermediate step in translating the design to the punched cards used by Jacquard looms to create the woven pattern. Technical perhaps, but beautiful and redolent of the styles of earlier years.

Nostalgia is a bit of a theme in the characterful watercolours of Andrew Storrie. These reflect northern life, often with a twist of humour and, a subtle nod to the bantams, with claret and amber scarves evident. Bev Morton’s mixed media beautifully focuses on the forms and colours found in the natural world. Stella Verity and Rob Thomson bring more conventional watercolours, but, for this show, they too are experimenting; Rob with the inclusion of mixed media and Stella with neurographic artwork. This artistic approach uses free-flowing organic lines and is considered as being therapeutic and meditative. There are dreamy land and seascapes from Rachel Hines, big bold abstracted landscapes from Leyla Murr and, in a break with tradition, charming local scenes, particularly of the canal by an earlier artist, Alan John Green.

The 3D offering is notable too. Ilkley based Ukrainian sculptor Victoria Chichinadze has four elegant cast bronzes featuring birds, Mick Kirkby-Geddes’ welded steel animals are much more down to earth in welded steel. For the show, local pottery guru Jane Hurford has restocked making this THE place to come for a ceramic hen.
Truly something to suit a very wide range of tastes.
The exhibition runs from 3 July to until 8 September 2025

23 Jul 2025

19:00 - 20:15

Wave of Nostalgia, Haworth

A thrilling Gothic historical mystery:
The brutal murder of Rose Parmiter seems to be a random and senseless act. Rose was the beloved cook at Evergreen House, a place of refuge for women and children, a place from which they can start their lives afresh. Proprietor Rebecca Harris is profoundly shocked by the death of her dear friend and alarmed at the mysterious events which begin to unfold shortly afterwards. Could the past be casting a shadow on the present? The malign legacy of the Everley family who called Evergreen home, cannot be ignored. After two further deaths it becomes clear there is an evil presence infecting their sanctuary, and Rebecca must draw out the poison of the past so the Evergreen residents can finally make peace with the darkness in their lives.

An evening with Joanna Miller – The Eights.

15 Jul 2025

19:00 - 20:15

Wave of Nostalgia, Haworth

‘Entertaining and moving…I came to love these four women as though they were my sisters’ TRACY CHEVALIER

Oxford, 1920. For the first time in its 1000-year history, the world’s most famous university has admitted female students. Four young women move into neighbouring rooms on Corridor Eight

But Oxford’s dreaming spires cast a dark shadow: in 1920, misogyny is still rife, influenza is still a threat, and the ghosts of the Great War are still very real indeed. And as the group navigate this tumultuous moment in time, their friendship will become more important than ever.

The Eights is a captivating debut novel about sisterhood, self-determination, courage, and what it means to come of age in a world that is forever changed.

Joanna will read from her book, answer questions and sign copies.

Beowulf: A Play About Stories

26 Jul 2025

19:30 - 21:00

Denso Marston Nature Reserve

Hear this ancient tale in the idyllic wooded grove at Denso Marston Nature Reserve

Four storytellers. One ancient tale. A thousand interpretations.

Journey back to a world of monsters, kings, dragons, and fate...but
don’t expect a quiet night of poetry and hero worship. In this
thrilling, darkly comic retelling, Beowulf becomes the battleground
for four clashing voices:
the Sage, who reveres the tale;
the Ardent, who worships its hero;
the Pup, who questions everything;
and the Ghoul, who just wants the gory bits.

Together, they wrestle with an epic that has shaped generations. But
whose version will you believe?
Whether you’re a seasoned theatre-goer or someone who just loves
a cracking good yarn, Beowulf is for you.
Expect fierce debate, lyrical battles, and even a DRAGON

This is theatre for anyone who’s ever asked:
“What makes a story worth telling?”
Original. Provocative. Playful.
Step into the firelight.
Hear the tale.
And decide for yourself in the wooded copse of Denso Marston Nature Reserve

An evening with Jenn Ashworth – The Parallel Path

24 Jul 2025

19:00 - 20:15

Wave of Nostalgia, Haworth

"A life exquisitely examined over a long walk across the north of England, from one of our finest human nature writers"

Armed with little more than a set of maps, she embarked on the most epic of English walks: Wainwright's Coast to Coast. Guided not just by Wainwright's writing but also by daily letters from her friend Clive - facing an epic journey of his own - Jenn's pilgrimage soon becomes more than just walking: a chance to reconnect and excavate, to re-engage with the act of caring for others and for oneself. But the walk's tricky terrain is not the only thing standing in Jenn's way.

As days go by, her balance begins to fail her and the act of putting one foot in front the other becomes a new exercise in caution. When a vicious heatwave forces her to pause her expedition and gives her an opportunity to investigate the new limitations of her body, Jenn is confronted with a life-altering diagnosis - and a new path of self-discovery.

Jenna will read from her book, answer questions and sign copies.

Haworth Retreat

31 Jul 2025

10:00 - 14:15

The Old School Room, Haworth

A morning dedicated to self-care – Slowing down, moving mindfully and connecting with nature.

In our busy lives, it is easy to feel that we must always strive to be more, do more, and have more.

This calming retreat uses yoga, movement and breath and a mindful moorland walk to provide respite from everyday pressures and expectations. It is a morning to take pleasure in being, rather than doing and enjoy a rest and reset.

How the Retreat Will Run
9:45 – 10:00 – Arrivals and Welcome

Introductions / What we hope to get out of the morning

10:00 – 10:45 – Gentle Yoga Flow – Using movement and breath to unwind

We start the day with a gentle yoga flow – connecting movement with breath. Moving in this was has a soothing meditative quality which eases physical tension and helps us activate our parasympathetic nervous system which helps us relax (often referred to as rest and digest mode).

10:45 – 11:15 – Break for a cuppa

A selection of teas will be provided with homemade treats made using natural ingredients.

11:15 – 12:15 – Walk on Penistone Hill

We will take in the stunning views of the wild moors. The natural world is a tonic for our physical and mental wellbeing. On this mindful walk we’ll enjoy, appreciate and truly notice our surroundings and the effect they have on us.

12:15 – 1:15 – Yin / Restorative Yoga and Guided Relaxation

This is our time to be still, to release deep rooted tensions from the body and allow the mind to be quiet.

Our yin yoga poses will focus on areas in the body where we habitually hold stress. This attention on the body provides a useful distraction from mental chatter and helps to bring a sense of calm.

1:15 – 2:15 – Lunch

A simple lunch of homemade soup and wheaten bread will be provided.

During this final part of the retreat, there is opportunity to discuss the morning, ask questions and have a chat.

What to Bring
A yoga mat (if you have one – mat will be available to borrow if you don’t have one)

Water bottle

Please feel free to bring any extra snacks or drinks.

Wear comfortable clothes you can move in.

Clothes and footwear suitable for walking – you may want a change of clothes or waterproofs if it’s raining.

What to expect
We offer a dogma-free approach yoga, focusing on the physical and mental health benefits of mindful movement, taking time for self-care and the benefits of spending time in nature.

The retreat is led by runner and yoga instructor, Rachel Pilling – As an athlete with a background of working in education, Rachel fully understands and has suffered with the effects of pushing through and trying to do more. Pay What you Feel

The Scaramanga Six
A biog or blurb is the thing that is asked for when someone needs a potted history or a convenient backstory. Well, for The Scaramanga Six, who’s activity spans over the last four decades, all you need to know is this – they are still here and they won’t go away.

The Carol Hodge Band
Yorkshire-dwelling singer-songwriter Carol Hodge is a wonderful musical dichotomy. With her roots and ethics firmly set in punk as a long-term collaborator with Crass frontman Steve Ignorant, Carol is currently touring the songs of Crass around the world with The Ignorant Band, on keyboards, BVs and lead vocals. Yet Carol is also a uniquely gifted songwriter and as able to conjure up beautiful pop-infused, heart-wrenching melodies as she is screaming into the face of authority and injustice.

Pay What You Feel - all money goes to the artists.
Help us build a scene, and support a local venue.
Bands finish in time for you to get the last train/bus back to Saltaire, Shipley, Leeds, Bradford, Keighley, Skipton...
Music and conversation continues until close.
