The Legend of the Black Castle of Bradford

2 Dec 2024

10:00 - 12:00

Millside Centre, 131 Grattan Road, Bradford, BD1 2HS

Many people believe that Bradford once boasted a castle somewhere on Westgate. This fortress is often referred to as ‘the Black Castle’ and is said to have been built during the Norman period. But is this a real legend or urban myth? Delivered by Jonathan Crewdson, Director of the Neighbourhood Project, this talk will look further at the Lengend of the Black Castle of Bradford. It will look at the reasons some people believe this and debate them in more detail. It aims to give food for thought and will give an opportunity for those attending to air their views. This event is free and is the first in a series of talks to look at the history of what is now Bradford City Centre including the stories of many former neighbourhoods it once had such as Longlands, Broomfields and Wapping. All of these will take place at the Millside Centre on the corner of Grattan Road and Thornton Road. Light refreshments will be provided. IMPORTANT! Please do not just turn up to this event. To book on, please email us using mail@neighbourhoodproject.org.uk or telephone or text Jonathan Crewdson on 07422 715910. This event is happening thanks to financial support from Bradford Council’s Arts, Culture and Heritage grants programme.
