The Mechanics’ Institute is something of a rarity in Bradford: an historic institution that still retains its original functions: the provision of meeting spaces, archives and a library for the enjoyment and education of all.
We were founded in 1832 and, to quote the Bradford Telegraph and Argus, we have survived two world wars, Spanish flu, the Depression, inflation, recession, austerity and the pandemic!
We are open Monday – Friday, 9:30am to 3:30pm.
Room hire is also available outside of these hours. Please use the links below to check availability or phone us to talk through your requirements.

ACCESSIBILITY
We occupy a historic building on one of Bradford’s oldest streets. Wheelchair users have successfully used our level from the street, the lift to all floors and the accessible toilet on Floor 2. However, we are aware that the limitations of the building mean that we currently do not meet the most recent standards.
The dimensions of our lift are:
Door: 735mm wide
Lift car: 1,070mm x 1,070mm.
We celebrate our heritage as one of the city’s “hidden gems” and look forward to playing a strong role in Bradford City of Culture.
