Thursday Talk: Branwell Brontë and biography

19 Jun 2025

14:00

The Brontë Parsonage Museum

Join us as we explore the first depictions of Branwell in Victorian biographies, focusing on the writing of Elizabeth Gaskell and Francis A Leyland.

As the earliest recollections of the family, these works became eulogies for the Brontës, solidifying their reputations. Through an exploration of traditions of Victorian death culture, this talk will highlight two contrasting depictions of Branwell and discuss how both biographers chose to represent the dead.

This month’s Thursday Talk will be delivered by Rose Dawn Gant, a PhD student and Brontë Parsonage Museum event volunteer.

Thursday Talks occur twice on the day: once at the Museum and once online.
