This fortune doll dates to the 1800s. Under the doll’s skirt are folded pieces of paper with handwritten fortunes on them. This doll would have been used as a fun fortune-telling game to entertain guests at parties or gatherings.

Many cultures and countries have customs or beliefs about luck and fortune. These are practised throughout the year or at certain times, like the New Year. Some objects can be thought to be lucky charms or talismans. Some people, eager to find out what the future holds for them, have their fortune read by fortune-tellers, traditionally by reading tarot cards, tea leaves or palms.
