Alex’s work explores the ‘black experience’ mostly through the lens of music, cinematography and photojournalism in contemporary society. Of Greek and Nigerian heritage, she draws inspiration from her culture and explores her own racial identity within her works. The resulting pieces create a web of black cultural references that often speak to deeper social narratives surrounding these themes.
Hip-hop, soul and jazz music is a huge source of her inspiration in many of her works. She seeks to capture the essence and cultural origins of these genres and to translate them into visually striking pieces. Within her works, she uses expressive brushstrokes and vivid colours to emphasise the richness of the culture.
Creating predominantly featureless portraits, she guides an audience to the ‘vibes’ of the piece as a whole. Although there are often direct cultural references, there is room for the viewers interpretation as to a subjects’ features. An unfamiliar audience to these references is inspired to use their own imagination, whereas a familiar audience may resonate and journey through these references.
