One not to miss! Fifty years ago, pioneering documentary photographer Daniel Meadows set off from Impressions Gallery former home in York on his 14 month journey touring throughout the UK on his Free Photographic Omnibus.
Daniel Meadows is one of the UK’s leading documentary photographers. His work, as well as his association with Impressions Gallery, stretches back for more than half a century; for, in November 1972, the joint exhibition with Martin Parr, ‘Butlin’s by the Sea’, was the show which launched Impressions when it opened its doors in the Shambles, York, as the country’s first photography gallery outside of London.
Among the many books Daniel has produced over his career, are the 20 zines which he has made with Café Royal Books, including a colour edition, ‘Butlin’s Filey 1972‘.
Daniel will focus specifically on the work he did in the mid-seventies as photographer-in-residence to the Borough of Pendle, documenting the last days of a steam powered cotton mill, a series which in 1978 became the heart of his Camerawork touring show ‘Shuttles, Steam and Soot’. This is a project he will revisit and celebrate next spring when a revised edition of that exhibition will open at Four Corners in London.
During our Photobook Fair, many of Daniel’s Café Royal Books zines will be on sale, including fresh printings of the three editions published to celebrate the 50th anniversary of his ground-breaking journey around England in the Free Photographic Omnibus 1973-74. Also on sale will be his recent title from Bluecoat, ‘Daniel Meadows, Book of the Road’.
