3 Feb 2025

19:00 - 21:00

Bingley Methodist Church, Herbert Street, Bingley, BD16 4JU

Dr Yan Wang Preston's talk is about how environmental topics connect to place and identity. She will introduce two of her major projects Mother River and Forest - shot in China, and in the second segment will talk about 'With Love. From an Invader' shot in the South Pennines.

She will have some of her books for sale.

We meet at Bingley Methodist Church Bingley BD16 4JU. Meetings start at 7.00pm ready for presentation start 7.15pm sharp and will usually finish around 9.00pm. There is a tea break around 8 pm. More details about Bingley Camera Club here: https://bingleycameraclub.co.uk/.-

In her project 'Mother River' Dr Preston photographed the entire 6211 km Yangtze river from its source. The project is both a physical odyssey through China and a metaphor for its evolution, travelling from the traditional culture still seen to be seen at its source through to the rampant modernisation approaching its mouth.

In Forest, she documents ecology recovery and landscaping projects investigating the politics of recreating forests and natural environments in China's mega-cities.

In With Love. From an Invader, Yan photographed a rhododendron bush in the South Pennines every other day for an entire year. it raises questions within the context of eco-politics: in an area completely changed due to industry, with no natural vegetation, can a ‘non-native and invasive species’ have a positive impact on local biodiversity? Preston’s work with the invasive species asks further questions: to what extent has the multicultural character of the British society been accepted as its national and native character?

Wang Preston’s practice is characterised by rigorous research processes led by her committed embodiment within the land to gain first-hand, skin-to-skin-like understanding. Her work is internationally and critically acclaimed. In 2023 she was the recipient for the inaugural RPS Award for Environmental Responsibility. She won 1st Prize in Professional Landscape, Sony World Photography Awards (2019); 1st Prize in Professional Commission, Syngenta Photography Prize (2017); and the Shiseido Photographer Prize at the Three Shadows Photography Annual Award in Beijing, China (2016). She was awarded as one of the Hundred Heroines by the Royal Photographic Society in 2018. Website: https://www.yanwangpreston.com/
